Encounter Earth
Crew Training Activities
Transmitting Data
Ever wondered how we get those neat pictures of Earth from space, such as
what you see on the Weather Channel? In this challenging activity family
teams will role-play the process of "remote sensing". The image
they design needs to be sent from the Transmitter in space to the Receiver
on Earth so accurately that it can be perfectly reconstructed. Candy "bits"
provide the data!
Night Lights
Pretend you are doing research on a special region of stars in space. How
well would you be able to see the night sky from your neighborhood?
In this simulation, a flashlight is used as a model for the stars as families
investigate the effects of ground light on their ability to see the night
sky. They will be challenged to design a system of street lighting that
will help reduced the "skyglow" astronauts report viewing from
space.
